Waka Waka Hitmakers: Where is Freshlyground Now?
Dubbed one of South Africa’s most-loved Afrofusion bands, Freshlyground fizzled out of the public spotlight after its newfound fame during the 2010 World Cup. The Afrofusion band comprised several talents globally and was formed in 2002 in Cape Town.
With a career spanning years, the band headlined several international stages, with the Fifa World Cup being one of the biggest stages the band ever performed on. They are best known for their smash hit Waka Waka “This Time For Africa” with Shakira, which received worldwide recognition. The music video has since gained over 3 billion views on YouTube, making it one of the most-watched videos on the platform.
The group went down in the history books as the first South African musical act to receive honors from MTV when they won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards. Over the years, the group was privileged to perform with African legends, including Miriam Makeba and the late Zimbabwean Jazz icon Oliver Mtukudzi. Freshlyground has six studio albums and has won several awards.
Band Members Go Solo
However, the group was dismantled, with several members pursuing their solo careers. The band stopped performing as a unit in 2019. Lead singer Zolani Mahola has rebranded herself as ‘The One Who Sings.’ On the other hand, passionate band members are now pursuing different career paths with music as something they do in their downtime.
The Future of Freshlyground
While Freshlyground may no longer be active as a band, their legacy lives on through their impactful music and memorable performances. Fans can still enjoy their beloved songs and support the band members in their solo endeavors. The diverse talents of Freshlyground continue to inspire and entertain audiences, and their contributions to the Afrofusion genre will always be remembered.
