A simple evening of camaraderie around a braai turned into a horrifying nightmare for Siyabonga and Bonga Ngcobo, identical twin brothers whose lives were abruptly ended after being shot. On a fateful Sunday evening in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the siblings fell victim to a fatal shooting while innocently attempting to purchase alcohol at a local tavern.
The Shocking Incident
The tragic incident unfolded in Ezimangweni, a community situated north of Durban, where the 35-year-old brothers, known for their close bond, were joined by a friend for what should have been a joyous evening. Little did they know that their gathering would take a tragic turn.
As they entered the local tavern around 7 p.m., a few armed individuals inexplicably confronted them. Without warning or apparent provocation, these assailants opened fire on Siyabonga and Bonga, mercilessly subjecting them to a hail of bullets. The result was heart-wrenching; the twins were struck multiple times and tragically lost their lives on the very spot where they had hoped to enjoy a peaceful evening.
A Motive Shrouded in Mystery
The motive behind this heinous act remains shrouded in mystery. This has left both the Ngcobo family and the community in shock and mourning. As the investigation unfolds, the local police are tirelessly working to bring clarity to this tragic event and hold those responsible accountable. Regrettably, no arrests have been made at this juncture, intensifying the anguish for the grieving family.
The Events Leading to the Tragedy
Siyabonga, residing in Isipingo, had come to visit his beloved twin brother, Bonga, for an extended weekend. They intended to enjoy quality time together, so they planned to host a braai on that ill-fated Sunday. Their decision to accompany a friend to purchase alcohol from the nearby tavern was the beginning of a chain of events that would forever change their lives.
An Eyewitness Account
Babongile, the twins’ brother, recounted the harrowing events leading to the tragedy. It is based on the friend’s account who was present at the scene. According to the friend, he was inside the tavern when a confrontation escalated between the twins and a group of unidentified men. Sensing trouble, he inquired about the cause of the altercation, only to be met with gunfire that shattered the evening’s tranquillity.
Babongile described the friend’s recollection: “He said he enquired why they were shooting his friends, but they didn’t respond. They shot the brothers several times, later demanding his car keys, and fled the scene. It was raining, and their blood was just flowing with the water. Siyabonga was shot nine times, while Bonga was shot seven times. This was a clear hit. The way they shot at them; they were killing them.”
