In a tragic turn of events, four individuals, including a pregnant woman, lost their lives when a vehicle swerved during the funeral procession for Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, and crashed into the mourners.

The incident occurred as the convoy carrying the late Vice President’s body travelled from the capital city, Lilongwe, to his home village in Ntcheu for his final rites. The vehicle, attempting to avoid the official convoy, lost control and struck a group of mourners. Eyewitnesses report that twelve others were injured and are currently receiving medical attention.

Chaos and Clashes

The accident took place on Sunday night and led to a series of chaotic events. Local residents clashed with police and military personnel who were escorting the convoy. Some mourners, insisting on viewing the coffin, threw rocks at government vehicles, which resulted in further disorder. Amidst the turmoil, a privately owned car veered off the road and collided with the mourners.

Statements from Officials

Felix Njawala, spokesperson for Chilima’s UTM party, commented on the incident: “In Dedza, people blocked the road and demanded to see the coffin.”

UTM’s Secretary General, Patricia Kaliati, condemned the violence and called for calm: “We cannot tolerate violence; Dr Chilima advocated for peace; let us do the same.”

Funeral and Public Reaction

Saulos Chilima, who tragically died in a plane crash on June 10, was laid to rest on Monday in Ntcheu, approximately 180 kilometres south of Lilongwe. Thousands of people lined the streets to honour his memory as the funeral procession made its way to his final resting place.

The sombre occasion was marked by grief and tension. During the funeral service at the national stadium on Sunday, mourners sang songs critical of President Lazarus Chakwera, reflecting the high emotions and political undercurrents surrounding the Vice President’s death.

Legacy of Saulos Chilima

Chilima, aged 51, and eight others perished when a military aircraft crashed under adverse weather conditions.
