South African Prisons prohibit Conjugal visits

Conjugal visits are prohibited in the country. Sources from the prison claim Bester bribed officials to gain access to a private room where he could spend time with his lover. Other prisoners have also alleged that Bester had preferential treatment during his incarceration, having been allowed to use an extension cord and even charge his laptop.

Magudumana was frequently allowed to visit Bester in prison and was seeing him as early as 2017, according to G4S. Last month, G4S officials were alleged to have helped Bester escape from the prison so he could spend time with Magudumana in a KwaZulu-Natal hotel.

Bester escaped from the facility after faking his death with the help of friends, who brought a corpse to his cell and burned it. Following the escape, the government announced it would terminate G4S’s contract, which was due to expire in 2026. Bester and five other co-accused, including Magudumana, were arrested in Arusha, Tanzania, last month after they had fled the country.

Currently, Bester and Magudumana are being tried in virtual court. The two are waiting for the next bail hearing, which has been postponed to the 20th of June.
