South Africa Mourns: A Look Back At Five Celebrity Shooting Victims

South Africa is still grappling with shock and disbelief following the sudden and frightening passing of its hip-hop icon, AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, due to gun violence, which has become a persistent issue marring the country’s reputation as the Rainbow Nation.

A day that had begun with promise and maintained its beauty well into the night took a dark turn in an instant.

By the end of the day, AKA lay motionless on the streets of Durban, his lifeless body soaked in his own blood from a wound on his head.

Tragically, AKA has joined the ranks of high-profile individuals whose lives were violently taken from them. This disturbing trend is exemplified by the following five South African celebrities who were fatally shot.

Lucky Dube
During a time when South African music genres such as Kwaito, House, and Afropop were dominating the scene, Lucky Dube remained dedicated to the sound of Reggae. Through his unwavering loyalty to the genre, he put South Africa on the world music map.

As a Motown Records artist, Lucky Dube recorded hit songs like “Remember Me,” “Prisoner,” and “Respect.”

Unfortunately, on October 18th, 2007, at the age of 43, Dube was tragically taken from us. While driving home after dropping off his two children at their uncle’s house, he was attacked by a group of carjackers and shot dead.

The five individuals responsible for his death were later sentenced to life in prison.

Senzo Meyiwa

Senzo Robert Meyiwa was a talented goalkeeper and captain for both the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana. On October 26, 2014, tragedy struck when the 30-year-old Meyiwa was shot and killed during a robbery at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus.
Despite attempts to save him, he was declared dead upon arrival at a hospital in Johannesburg.
Nine years later, the case remains unresolved, and many South Africans are still eagerly seeking answers and justice for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.
DJ Sumbody

Oupa John Sefoka, commonly known as DJ Sumbody, was a multi-talented individual who excelled as a recording artist, DJ, events promoter, restaurant owner, and label executive. He was renowned for producing popular hits such as “Monate Mpolaye” with Cassper Nyovest.

In the early hours of November 20, 2022, DJ Sumbody was tragically killed in a hail of bullets while driving to a gig in Woodmead. He was scheduled to perform later that day at the All White Veuve Clicquot Picnic, but sadly, he never got the chance. DJ Sumbody was 46 years old at the time of his death.

Dumi Masilela

Dumi Masikeka was a talented musician and actor who was widely recognized for his portrayal of Sifiso Ngema in the popular etv soap opera “Rhythm City.” He was married to actress Simphiwe Ngema.

Sadly, on August 2, 2017, Dumi was involved in a harrowing carjacking attempt in Thembisa. In an effort to escape the robbers, he drove away and was shot in the process. After the incident, he handed over the wheel to a friend and was driven to the hospital. Sadly, he passed away the following morning.

The police eventually caught the perpetrators and they were sentenced to life in prison for their crime.

DJ Citi Lyts

DJ Citi Lyts, whose real name was Sandile Nkululeko Mkhize, was a talented hip-hop artist and the younger brother of the late South African hip-hop legend ProKid.

Tragically, on February 14, 2022, at around 12:30 a.m., DJ Citi Lyts was standing with friends in Soweto when a car pulled up and four men armed with three rifles approached them. The men fired ten shots at the 32-year-old artist’s upper body, causing his death.
