‘Not Again’ Thabo Bester’s Lawyers Pull Out From His Case
The Bloemfontein magistrate’s court recently witnessed a surprising turn of events as the two legal representatives of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester withdrew from the case. Advocate Jeremiah Pela and instructing attorney Tsireledzo Ndou made the unexpected decision just hours before their client was scheduled to appear alongside eight co-accused individuals.
Delay Due to Load-Shedding
Although the proceedings were initially set to begin before 11 am, there was a delay caused by load-shedding. However, the court managed to commence the hearing after resolving the power issue.
Application for Recusal
Advocate Pela, addressing the court, submitted an application for recusal in relation to the matter. He explained, “We request to bring an application for recusal on this matter. Myself and the instructing attorney, Mr Ndou, had a discussion with our client and we reached an amicable agreement that there won’t be further instructions from today. So based on that, we do not have further instructions to proceed with this matter and if the court is inclined, it is our humble request for the court to accept our request to be recused.”
Bester’s Awareness of the Application
Magistrate Motlholo Khabisi inquired whether Thabo Bester was aware of the application made by his legal representatives. Bester, who appeared virtually from Kgosi Mampuru prison, where he is currently being held, confirmed his awareness while attired in an expensive Louis Vuitton sweater.
