Music Producer DJ Maphorisa Gets Assault Case Withdrawn by NPA
Renowned music producer DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, can now breathe a sigh of relief as he walks away a free man. The Randburg Magistrate’s Court, in a recent development on Friday, 25 August, revealed that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has officially withdrawn the assault case against him.
DJ Maphorisa Assault Case – The Allegations and Legal Process
The incident leading to the case unfolded in May of this year when DJ Maphorisa was arrested on charges of allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, the actress Thuli Phongolo, at her residence in Sandton. Following his initial court appearance, where he was granted R4,000 bail, Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement. Despite this, the NPA initially chose to pursue the case.
NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, explained, “We can confirm that the case against DJ Maphorisa was withdrawn after he lodged representations with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions which were successful. He lodged representations, and upon studying them we then took a decision to withdraw [the charges].”
Mjonondwane further clarified that due consideration was given to the withdrawal statement submitted by the complainant and that the decision to withdraw the case was made based on a thorough evaluation of the available evidence.
Rejection of Anger Management Courses
Earlier this month, there were reports that the NPA had suggested anger management courses as a condition for withdrawing the charges against DJ Maphorisa. However, this offer was rejected by the artist. Sources close to the matter revealed that DJ Maphorisa declined the option, citing a need to prove his innocence to avoid being labelled as an abuser in the long term.
The sources also pointed out that the music producer was concerned about potential ramifications for his career, particularly in terms of gender-based violence initiatives and women empowerment projects. The fear was that failure to clear his name could lead to sponsor cancellations and loss of endorsement deals.
The turn of events has brought an end to the legal ordeal for DJ Maphorisa, allowing him to focus on his music career and other endeavours without the cloud of legal proceedings hanging over him.
