Renowned Limpopo-born singer Makhadzi has disclosed that she had to borrow money to attend the 19th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards in Los Angeles, California. She triumphed in the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act category, surpassing fellow South African artist Tyler ICU and other global talents.

The singer could not afford to attend the BET Awards out of her own pocket. She had to borrow from Mashonisa to get the superstar experience at the BET Award ceremony and build her brand name.

Makhadzi’s Financial Hurdles

In a heartfelt moment on Podcast and Chill, Makhadzi shared that she resorted to taking a loan to cover her travel expenses for the awards show. This revelation comes on the heels of a December report by Sunday World, which stated that she allegedly owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) R6.6 million. With the help of a tax consultant, this amount was later reduced to R2.7 million.

Makhadzi explained her decision to borrow money from loan sharks to maintain her superstar image and career. “To travel, I have to rely on mashonisa [loan sharks]. My team borrows money so I can fly business class because I must uphold the image of the superstar that I am.
