According to Drum, Bonang reportedly clapped back at Bester’s wild allegations, saying that she did not know him at all. She only knew him as the “Facebook Rapist” because she had read about him and his association with Pearl. She stated that she did not know him from a bar of soap.

In 2018, while in prison, Bester allegedly ran a multi-million rand scam under the alleged accomplice’s name, 21st Century Media. The company held a grand launch party at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton, attended by celebs like Amanda du Pont and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Bester, using the alias Tom Matsepe, told employees that he was based in New York and was related to SA billionaire Patrice Motsepe. Through the organisation, Bester facilitated a conference called the Women In Media and advertised tickets to the public for R1250.

Bester booked Bonang Matheba as the MC for the event and advertised US actresses Taraji P Henson and Halle Berry and singer Ashanti as speakers. Local actress and media mogul Connie Ferguson and presenter Claire Mawisa were also billed to appear. But a month before the event, the women were alerted to the scam. Bonang issued a statement withdrawing as host from the event.
