A tragic incident unfolded in KwaZulu-Natal when a 24-year-old man fatally stabbed his 25-year-old friend during a heated dispute over Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year. The shocking altercation occurred at a local eMpangeni store on New Year’s Eve.

The two friends, both avid fans of rival maskandi musicians Khuzani Mpungose and Mthandeni, found themselves in a violent clash as emotions escalated. The disagreement reached a critical point, leading to one of them wielding a sharp object and inflicting a fatal stab wound on the other.

Arrest Confirmed by KZN Police Spokesperson

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the spokesperson for KZN police, officially confirmed the arrest, stating, “Police in Ntambanana have apprehended a 24-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old man who was allegedly stabbed to death at Ebhokisini Area.”

Satma Expresses Concern and Advocates for Non-Violence

The South African Traditional Music Achievements Awards (Satma) conveyed deep concern over the tragic incident. Keletso Dlamini, Satma’s spokesperson, revealed plans to address the matter with the SABC and other stakeholders.

Dlamini urged traditional music enthusiasts to steer clear of violence, emphasizing that traditional music should be a source of positive celebration. “No one deserves to die over a song. Let us spread a message of love and unity,” appealed Dlamini.

Khuzani Mpungose to Address Controversy

Following the violent incident at the New Year’s Eve music event, Khuzani Mpungose, the Ukhozi FM’s New Year Song of the Year contest winner, is expected to break his silence. The artist faced an attack from the crowd, suspected to be followers of Mthandeni, during the event where his winning song, “Umjolo Lowo,” was performed.
