The family and friends of the late Nollywood star John Okafor, known to many as Mr Ibu, are reaching out to the public for financial support to cover the costs of his burial.

Renowned for his exceptional comedic talent, Mr Ibu tragically passed away on March 2, 2024, due to a cardiac arrest at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. His passing came after a prolonged battle with health issues, culminating in a leg amputation.

Fundraising Efforts

A GoFundMe page has been created by his loved ones to gather the necessary funds for his burial. The funeral is scheduled for June 28, 2024, marking the conclusion of a five-day memorial event.

Financial Hardship

In a statement shared by Punch, the Central Planning Committee—comprising Monday Diamond (Chairman), Christy Ejiofor (Secretary), and Emeka Rollas (President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria)—explained the financial strain Mr Ibu’s illness had placed on the family.

“Mr Ibu’s illness required tens of millions of naira in medical expenses over the course of nearly a year. We are asking for public support to ensure a fitting farewell for this beloved actor,” the committee stated. They also provided a Zenith Bank account for contributions.

Honouring a Legend

Mr Ibu, who passed away at 62, left a lasting legacy in Nollywood through his humorous performances and unforgettable roles. The planned funeral activities aim to honour his substantial contributions to the Nigerian film industry and celebrate his life.

Funeral Schedule

The funeral proceedings will begin on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, with a novelty match between Nollywood stars and Rangers International. This will be followed by a candlelight procession on Wednesday, June 26, and a wake at Mr Ibu’s residence in Eziokwe Amurri, Enugu State, on Thursday, June 27.

On Friday, June 28, 2024, his body will be transported from the Eastern Nigeria Medical Center to his hometown in Amurri, Nkanu West LGA, for the burial ceremony at 10 am. The funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, June 30, followed by a Thanksgiving service.
