DJ Maphorisa Fires Legal Team Amid Assault Case

DJ Maphorisa, the renowned producer and Blaqboy Music boss, has reportedly fired his legal team over a disagreement regarding his assault case. He is accused of beating up and strangling his girlfriend, former Generations: The Legacy actress Thuli Phongolo.

Why did DJ Maphorisa fire his legal team?

According to a source who spoke to Sunday World, DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, was not happy with his legal team because they agreed with the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) proposal for him to attend anger management courses.

DJ Maphorisa does not agree with this proposal, as he feels it will rob him of a chance to prove to the court and the public that he is innocent. He believes that he did not assault Thuli Phongolo and that the case was fabricated.

The alleged assault took place in May at Thuli Phongolo’s home in Sandton, Johannesburg. The former Rockville actress claimed in a police statement that DJ Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her in her chest. He also allegedly slapped her across the face and grabbed her by her neck on the balcony.

A source told the publication that the couple had fought in full view of patrons during one of his gigs the night before. Their argument was allegedly sparked by a man who made advances at Thuli Phongolo and promised to send her R40 000.

Status of the assault case

DJ Maphorisa was arrested and granted R4 000 bail by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court in May. Although Thuli Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement the day after his arrest, her plea had not been finalised as the NPA needed time to investigate.

Before the first court appearance after receiving bail, the couple released a joint statement, saying they wanted to deal with the matter privately.

The matter was postponed in July and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. DJ Maphorisa is set to appear in court soon to find out if the NPA will prosecute him.
