South Africans on Twitter were surprised when they finally met AKA’s bestie referred to as Sim Dope on the album Levels.

Sim Dope was seen on TV for the first time last Friday at a ceremony held to honour AKA at Sandton Convention Centre.

AKA and his friend Tebello Motsoane were shot and killed on February 10 outside Wish Restaurant on Florida Road in Durban.

Until last Friday, most South Africans only knew the song “Sim Dope” by AKA. Everyone was surprised when the person who inspired the song showed up at the rapper’s memorial service.

Sim Dope, whose real name is Simphiwe Gumede, gave a heartwarming speech that caused a big stir on Twitter. He also told the story of when AKA told him that he had recorded a song using his nickname Sim Dope as the title.

However,a Twitter user suggested that there might be more to AKA’s friend Sim Dope than what people know. @ChrisExcel102, tweeted that Sim Dope might also be BI Phakathi, the person who does a lot of charity work in the country.

@ChrisExcel102 wrote:

So Sim Dope is the original the BI Phakathi….

– Same Chiskop

– Same skin tone

– Same voice

– Same English

– Both Rich

– Both low key on social media

The other section of netizens disagreed with ChrisExcel. Here are some of their opinions:

@Nkondlologist:

@porn75404410:

not balancing

While we could not establish if Sim Dope was BI Phakathi when we wrote this story, here is what we currently know about him.

1. Sim Dope and AKA both went to St John’s College in 2000 and did the same sports.

2. Robert Gumede, a businessman, is the father of the ‘Sim Dope’. Robert is the founder of Gijima Technologies and its parent company Gijima Group. In 2013, Robert invited the famous American rapper Rick Ross to perform at his 50th birthday party.

3. AKA gave Simphiwe the nickname “Sim Dope” when he became part of their school’s rugby team. He [AKA] said: “Now that you are a ‘boet’ you can’t be going on a Saturday and be known as Simphiwe; I mean, that’s not dangerous.”

4. He lives a quiet life, just like BI Phakathi.
