Advocate Malesela Teffo Faces Legal Troubles – Arrested on Multiple Charges
Disbarred advocate Malesela Teffo is facing mounting legal woes as he was arrested on Tuesday on charges of fraud, assault, malicious damage to property, and trespassing. He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Previous Legal Issues
Teffo was previously out on R10,000 bail for another assault case, where he was accused of failing to appear in court. His recent arrest took place in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, where he was representing men accused of killing Senzo Meyiwa. The lawyer has been arrested for many charges including fraud, assault, malicious damage to property and many more. He was taken to Pretoria Central Police Station from the courtroom.
Chief Justice’s Condemnation
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo expressed strong disapproval of the manner in which the police arrested Teffo. The arrest occurred inside a courtroom while Teffo was in the process of representing his clients. Zondo criticized the police for not waiting until Teffo left the courtroom before executing the arrest, stating that it was disrespectful to the judiciary.
LPC’s Contempt of Court Case
Three months ago, the court granted Teffo a reprieve to file papers in a matter involving the Legal Practice Council (LPC). The LPC had accused Teffo of practicing as an advocate despite being disbarred, and they sought to find him guilty of contempt of court. They were requesting direct imprisonment for him. Teffo’s appearance in the Senzo Meyiwa trial further aggravated the situation, as he attempted to make submissions as an “advocate” before being removed from the court.
