Actress Nelisiwe Sibiya Faces Massive Backlash At Political Gathering

Durban Gen actress Nelisiwe Sibiya found herself in an unexpected situation during the Miss and Mr King Cetshwayo District Municipality pageant at the University of Zululand in Empangeni, northern KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 21 July. The actress was met with boos from the audience while on stage.

The Controversial Remark

According to sources, Nelisiwe had to leave the stage after she referred to Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters as “maqabane,” a term commonly associated with African National Congress (ANC) supporters and members. It’s worth noting that the beauty pageant was organized by the IFP-led Municipality.

“She did not think a simple term would have people going crazy,” said the source.

The source continued: “She is just an actress who probably does not pay attention to politics or protocols, but obviously people won’t know that.”

Nelisiwe Sibiya Responds to backlash

In response to the backlash, Nelisiwe stated that she was unaware that her choice of words would anger some of the supporters, but she denied being booed off stage. The actress explained that she left the stage because her segment had ended, and she had to rush back to Durban for other engagements.

Somizi’s Surprising Declaration

During the same event, popular Idols SA judge, Somizi Mhlongo, who served as the MC, made a surprising announcement about his political affiliations. In a video shared by journalist Sihle Mavuso, Somizi declared his support for the IFP.

“I, Somizi Mhlongo, am Inkatha Freedom Party. I don’t care about you. Next year, I’m here. Anything about Inkatha, I’m here.

“If I change, then turn your back against me, we agree? Mayor, you know that I’m voting for Inkatha. I’m not sure about you. But, based on his fashion sense [points at man behind him], I’ll be the minister of fashion,” he said.
