WATCH : Thugs pay heavily in South Africa
THEY SAID they were tired of rapists and robbers in their township. They admitted to committing the brutal act and said they felt no remorse. THEY WANTED IT TO BE A WARNING TO THOSE WHO SPREAD TERROR IN THEIR TOWNSHIP. “If the police and the justice system can’t keep the thugs in prison, we will put them in their graves,” an angry resident from Diepsloot, Joburg told Daily Sun as cops covered the bodies with silver blankets.
“If police preach not taking the law into our own hands, why do they allow these men to walk in and out of police cells as if they are visiting a mall?” The woman’s opinion seemed to be echoed by many Diepsloot residents. This came after four suspected thugs were killed on Saturday morning, allegedly by angry community members. Residents claim the men went on a spree of rape, murder, house-breaking, assault and other crimes. Community members woke up at about 4am on Saturday morning and started hunting the men one by one.
Later on Saturday morning, the suspects were doused in petrol and set alight. They burnt to death as residents danced to Akukulaleki ma kuno tsotsi, which means: You can’t sleep when there are thugs around. A36-year-old resident said Diepsloot is like hell on earth. “Every weekend people die. Women are raped, stabbed to death and dumped in the street or in streams,” she said. “I’m so relieved that four of them are gone. It is a strong message to the others that we are coming for them.”
Another woman said it was time to celebrate. “They come into our houses with weapons and firearms. They force the women to have with them and make the husbands watch. How can we allow such people in our community?” She said the thugs even rap–e small kids. “Who can feel sorry for such people?”
A 35-year-old resident said she didn’t feel sorry for the dead tsotsis. “I am a part of the celebrations for their death because these men were cruel.” She said what sparked the Saturday hunt was the brutal killing of a woman who was ra_ped and her private parts stabbed. Another family was robbed after the suspects broke into their shack while they were sleeping. One thug was recognised and they fetched him in his shack. After a beating, he was forced to point out the other suspects. They were beaten, burnt and dumped at a dumpsite next to a stream.
Gauteng police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele said police are investigating cases of murder and assault.
