Orlando Pirates star arrested for attempted murder
After seven days on the run, Orlando Pirates player Patrick Phungwayo turned himself in to the police to face charges of attempted murder and pointing a firearm at a man in Spruitview.
Phungwayo, 29, handed himself over at the Katlehong police station on Monday morning after being sought by the police for an incident that happened at the beginning of the month.
He and his brother Phelelani allegedly assaulted the man before pulling out a gun and shooting him on his ring finger.
Police spokesman Captain Mega Ndobe told Sowetan that the Orlando Pirates player arrived with his lawyer.
“A 29-year-old soccer player was arrested yesterday [Monday] at the Katlehong police station. He was brought in by his lawyer after a case was opened against him for attempted murder and pointing of firearm,” Ndobe said.
The brothers appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court yesterday and were released on R2000 bail each.
The Bucs’ left-back’s phone rang unanswered and he did not respond to SMSes sent to him.
Orlando Pirates administrative officer Floyd Mbele said the club was not aware of the incident.
